Spring Ball

Spring Recreational

Spring Recreation is for players who are looking to play softball in a competitive environment. Spring Recreation will run approximately 12 weeks beginning with practices in January and ending end of April.

Return to Play Guidelines - Covid Safety

Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, AVGS must abide by the new guidelines issued by the State of California issued for youth sports as well as guidelines set forth by USA Softball.  Our number on priority is to keep our players safe.  We ask each family to voluntarily abide by AVGS' return to play games to help keep our players, coaches, and volunteers safe at the fields.

  • ALL 6U players are required to wear fielder's face masks at all positions during practice and games.
  • ALL 8U players are required to wear fielder's face masks at all positions during practice and games.
  • ALL 10U players are required to wear fielder's face masks at all positions during practice and games.
  • 12U infield players (1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, shortstop, and pitcher) are required to wear fielder's face masks during practice and games.
  • 14U pitchers are required to wear fielder's face masks during practice and games.
  • 14U infield positions are highly recommended to wear fielder's face masks.

All adults who work directly with players must register through the system AND fill out and submit a background check form/Drivers License on an annual basis.

Season - Practices will start in the second half of January and games will start end of January, and will be every Saturday for all teams. Games will additionally be played every Wednesday evening for 10U, 12U and 14U starting at the beginning of the season.

  • Practice schedule - To Be Assigned After Teams Formed
  • Clinics  - TBD

Divisions for 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U will attend required evaluations prior to the beginning of the season.  Please make sure your player knows that the evaluations are nothing to be nervous about.  They simply allow the league to make sure that each team is "drafted" and the teams are created with fairly equal abilities.

Pitching Evaluations

With the exception of players who have never pitched before, all players who would like to pitch during the Spring season must attend pitching evaluations.  This process enables the coaches to make educated decisions regarding their pitching staff during the draft process.

A player can request to play up but the ability to play up to the next division is not guaranteed.  In order to play up, the player must:

  1. sign up in the age appropriate division,
  2. note in the comments section of registration or send an email to that you would like your player to be evaluated to play-up;
  3. attend both the age-appropriate and the play-up evaluations, and
  4. be chosen in the draft in the top 5 draft rounds.

If a player is not chosen in the top 5 draft rounds in the play-up division, she will be placed in her age-appropriate division.

A player of 6U age is eligible to play up to 8U in the Spring recreational season in the following scenarios:

  1. the player has played 2 seasons of 6U softball;
  2. the player is selected by an 8U coach within the first 5 rounds of the 8U team formation, regardless of previous experience; or
  3. the player has either played a season in 8U rec at AVGS previously.

Please note:

  • Although the player will register under the age-appropriate division, please indicate in their registration that they would like to play up to 8U in the registration.
  • For scenario 1 or 2 above, the player must be selected by an 8U coach in the 8U team formation in any round.
  • 8U coaches are not obligated to select a 6U player requesting to play up to 8U.
  • If a player requesting to play up to 8U is not selected, she will be added to a 6U team.
  • 8U new to the league requests involving a 6U player does not guarantee that the 6U player will be added to the 8U team.

The snack bar allows the league to make money that enables us to keep our fees very low.

Parents are obligated to work two 2-hour shifts in the snack bar for each player during the Spring season.  Siblings may fulfill this obligation if they are 16 or over.

Families if you do not work a shift your check will be cashed.

AVGS and all local softball leagues operate under a draft system for the Spring season.  For this reason, it is not possible to accommodate friend requests with the exception of the two circumstances outlined below.   However, you will find that one of the best parts of recreational softball is all the new lifelong friends your player will find on the team she ends up on.

Friend requests are only allowed for the following two circumstances.

  • 6U player
  • New 8U player who has never played with AVGS before.

Only ONE friend request is allowed and please note that if multiple girls request the same friend it will not be possible to honor all the requests.  We will do the best we can but can not guarantee placement with the requested friend.

Please email the league at and put "Friend Request" in the subject line of the email only if you fall into one of the following two categories (if you do not put "Friend Request" in the subject line then your request may not be processed).

Aliso Viejo Community Association ("AVCA") owns the fields at the Aliso Viejo Community Park.  In order to allow AVGS to use their fields, all AVGS players will be required to sign an AVCA waiver before stepping onto the fields.

Special note about waivers: A player is not registered until the AVCA waiver is turned in. A player will not be permitted to participate in tryouts/evaluations, practices, or clinics unless a waiver is signed and returned. Please bring to evaluations or you can mail it to:

AVGS is looking for volunteers to coach our young athletes for all divisions: 6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U. Coaches are essential to the games.  Coaches not only teach our athletes foundational skills essential to success on the diamond - coaches create the environment necessary for our athletes to develop self confidence and core principles of teamwork and good sportsmanship essential to success in life. Our young athletes will quickly become part of your "family." It is our goal to provide you with all necessary tools, resources, and education. Understand the most important tools you already possess - patience, compassion, and dedication. Consider being a coach and submit a Manager's application.

The Registration "Spring Ball" is not currently available.
